Hi! My name is Lauren Hokulani and I am a wife, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a granddaughter and one of my favourites – a remedial massage therapist making my way into myotherapy.
I moved here from Hawaii with my husband in 2013 and fell in love with Melbourne.
Is Corporate Massage ‘it’ for you or do you apply your skills in private practice? If yes, how and where?
Currently, I do corporate/event massages as well as my own practice at FULLFITMENT in Kensington. I also subcontract for Action MYOTHERAPY for mobile treatments.
It takes a special kind of person to work as a touch practitioner. Why do you do it?
Looking back I noticed a lot of signs and doors pointing me to massage. I always loved volunteering to help out at local famers markets in Hawaii, I would find myself gravitating towards the tent with the Lomi Lomi students in it. It intrigued me, I knew I wanted to do it.
Throughout the years with distractions from close ones saying that I should find another career such as nursing or doctor I got my degree in nutrition and dabbled in psychology, worked in hospitality and banks. Massage was my calling, I loved everything about it.
Knowing I could relieve pain just by relaxing a muscle, you can someone completely upset and stressed leave you feeling great and energised when they get off my massage table.
So! a couple years ago, I set out on this journey to become qualified. BEST THING I EVER DID!! Massage opened a whole new world for me and now I am going into Myotherapy. Each day brings me new learnings, ideas and ways to treat.
How does what you do every day contribute to the greater good of your community, or thinking big, the planet!?
I massage people anywhere from 5 mins to 90mins. These people that I touch have their lives to live. If I can give them a few moments of relieve, relaxation, the ability to unwind, distress or even vent. I WILL.
Having less stress, will aid in that persons day being better or help them to get better. If I can keep one person from feeling pain or ease a lifetime of pain that makes what I do worth it.
And very importantly, because you’re a normal (super) human and like to do normal (super) human things too, what is the most normal thing about you?
Human, that I am. I am all about balance. YES! I go to the gym 4-6 days a week, I eat very clean. But I have my couple…. well, maybe few days of shoving OREOS in my mouth and being a couch potato.
I am an animal lover! Currently, you can call me the cat lady, we may add a nice big dog in the mix or a bird! I don’t know, fish too. I am madly in love with my husband and keeping him stress free and happy is one of my goals in life.
I love to think I am balanced. I have my good and bad days. Or clean eating days and over indulging days. Days where I go to the gym and work my butt off and days where I lay on the couch and not move a single muscle.
We are all human, so take a hold of it. BE HUMAN and don’t beat yourself up over things you can’t change. Change what you can 😉
Amen Lauren. Nothing more need be added. Except to say thanks a million for choosing Seated Massage client partners to spend some of your precious and loving time with.
